Floating logistics hubs anchor next-gen supply chains

In areas with limited port space or urban congestion, floating logistics hubs offer flexible alternative infrastructure. These platforms support cargo storage, transshipment, and distribution directly offshore—saving cost while improving access.

Real developments underway include:

  • Floating container terminals gain momentum: A January 2025 report from RISE and Sea Technology—commissioned by Sweden’s Transport Administration—highlights that modular offshore container terminals are now technically and economically viable. These terminals could offload Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) offshore, reducing feeder truck traffic and protecting land-constrained ports like Gothenburg.

  • Offshore wind logistics from floating ports: In the UK, agencies are evaluating floating port modules as staging zones for offshore wind farms. These facilities could host pre-assembly and transport equipment near installation sites, overcoming challenges of inadequate land-based port space.

  • Local solutions for last-mile delivery: The Floating Economy reports early-stage pilots using floating warehousing near waterfront business districts—allowing goods to be offloaded directly from small vessels into modular storage, cutting inland logistics and urban congestion.

That’s not all: in archipelagic regions like Southeast Asia, floating terminals allow large vessels to offload at sea, with smaller boats completing deliveries to islands—improving access to remote areas and reducing costs.

As continental ports struggle with land shortages and rising demand, floating logistics hubs are shifting from concept to reality. With pilot projects moving forward across Northern Europe and beyond, waterborne logistics could reshape global supply chains.
